sarah palin is a very scary lady, she's an extreme republican in a hot momma body [Aug. 29th, 2008|04:08 pm]
from the boston globe (it's boston's ny times)

John McCain's vice-presidential pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is an evangelical Protestant with a strong record of opposition to abortion and an openness to teaching creationism in the public schools.

In October of 2006, the Anchorage Daily News described Palin's positions on social issues in a lengthy profile:

"A significant part of Palin's base of support lies among social and Christian conservatives. Her positions on social issues emerged slowly during the campaign: on abortion (should be banned for anything other than saving the life of the mother), stem cell research (opposed), physician-assisted suicide (opposed), creationism (should be discussed in schools), state health benefits for same-sex partners (opposed, and supports a constitutional amendment to bar them)."

And earlier that year, the Anchorage Daily News reported that Palin said the following about creationism at a debate:

"Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information....Healthy debate is so important and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both. And you know, I say this too as the daughter of a science teacher. Growing up with being so privileged and blessed to be given a lot of information on, on both sides of the subject -- creationism and evolution. It's been a healthy foundation for me. But don't be afraid of information and let kids debate both sides."

a few weeks ago, i took a short in duration road trip for no real reason

Prabhupada's Palace of Gold and City of God - New Vrindaban, West Virginia
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tour/94day6.html#palace i wanna go back there! i only had time to drive up to it, it's in the middle of nowhere, the main 'complex' didnt appear to occupy as much floor space as i imagined but it did cover a fair amount of square feet

"Crux Gloria" Cross - Night Outline of Jesus
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/tips/getAttraction.php?Tip_AttractionNo==7957
it didnt look that that cool from the highway but i got off the highway and drove up to it, it's on a dead end street, sooooo creepy, especially cause i was alone

and on my next trip towards cleveland
World's Largest Virgin Mary Statue
http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/OHWINmary.html
although that doesn't seem that cool, just a simple drive by should suffice, especially cause my next trip i'll probably be alone

What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Northern. Whether you have the world famous Inland North accent of the Great Lakes area, or the radio-friendly sound of upstate NY and western New England, your accent is what used to set the standard for American English pronunciation (not much anymore now that the Inland North sounds like it does).

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

a hypothetical from http://www.ensc.sfu.ca/undergrad/courses/ENSC301/a1a.html [Mar. 12th, 2007|01:02 am]
Nuclear waste is being stored in an underground repository in Alberta. Some environmentalists are concerned that with the present design, there is a high probability that radioactive waste will escape in about 500 years time. If that happens, about a billion dollars worth of arable land will be rendered unusable. What is the most it is worth spending now in order to prevent this loss in the future? (Assume that if the money is not spent now, it can be invested at 10% interest.)

Using the standard formula, the present worth of a billion dollars 500 years hence is less than a cent. This implies that it's not worth going to any trouble to make the waste repository safe for that length of time.

This is a rather troubling conclusion, because the example is not imaginary; the US, for example, is currently trying to design a nuclear waste repository under Yucca Mountain in Nevada that will be secure for ten thousand years -- twenty times as long as in our example. It isn't clear how the engineers involved in the project can rationally plan how to allocate their funds, since the tool we usually use for that purpose -- engineering economics -- gives answers that seem irrational.

food review -- espnzone [Dec. 24th, 2006|02:11 am]
[music |electrognomes? xmas song]

maybe the most bland burger i've ever eaten, the fries were thin + crunchy + altho not bland i only ate them becuz i must pack it in + plus its xmas + what kind of secular humanis would i be if i didn't consume all my food i purchased when there's starving people (probably would have been better fries if the folks at espn had blandend (sp?) them up); you'd thick a bland burger wouldn't cause me tummy troubles, but you'd be wrong; this gets my lowest rating ever, 7 thumbs DOWN

i was only at the espnzone cuz i was working in times square, making sure those russians were doing their counting and i had time to kill so i figured i'd watch football
